When my grandfather passed away my grandmother came to me and asked me if there was anything I wanted of his. I didn’t even need to think about it…I quickly asked her if I could have his bible. My grandfather was such a Godly man. He displayed the fruit of the Spirit better than anyone I knew. He was loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and had self-control. (Galatians 5:22)
Now that I’m an adult the things I remember about my grandfather are the things I hope someday my children will remember about me. The love he had for my grandmother was contagious. I believe with my whole heart that she drove him crazy but he never expressed it. He definitely had his ornery moments, but his love overflowed! He was involved in our lives, coming to our sporting events, graduations, and never missed a birthday!
Every Christmas Eve he would have my brother read the Christmas story from the bible. I remember as a child not really listening but wondering what was in my packages?!? I started the tradition of reading the Christmas story several years ago with my children and I’m pretty sure they are more focused on the gifts too. Realizing, and hoping that someday they will teach their children the same or maybe even ask for my bible.
When my grandmother gave me my grandfather’s bible there was more than one. The picture shows how often he read and used his Bible, with electrical tape holding it together the book was falling apart, but his heart was molded with scripture.
Father, I pray that my heart will be molded with scripture and that my children will read, learn, and know the Truth! Thank you for my grandfather who taught me so much about the life I need to live. Help me to be grounded in the Word and not have any anxious thoughts. 1 John tells us to love, Abide in Him, and love at all times. Help me shower others with love!
23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
What a beautiful story! Thank you sharing and reminding us that we need to be mindful that everyday events in life can be special and meaningful!
