Sunday morning I had the opportunity to teach children the Truth!  Thankful for a church that pours scripture into children. I was teaching Galatians 6:9 “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t give up.”

How in the world do you teach this to children?  I decided to interview a very special leader at our church and when I asked her if there was anything in her life that she had to work hard to achieve she responded…Reading!  “Reading was so hard for me.  All my friends could read better than me.”  I asked her how did she learn to read? She expressed that she spent extra time learning, missing most of her recess time, after school, and every night her mom did reading flashcards with her.  She even told us that during the summer she worked just as hard; missing out on swimming, slumber parties, and camps.

All the children could relate to reading.  Some picked it up easier than others but they remembered learning to read.  Some of the children shouted out specific books they were reading and others told us the age that they learned to read but it was after the story was over that touched my heart.  I was picking up and I heard this sweet voice say “Miss Kendra” I looked up and there was a little girl.  She told me “reading has always been hard for me and I don’t like it.”  I told her that reading is hard for a lot of people.  She then went on to say that she didn’t know the Bible said to keep trying and not give up.  She expressed that she is going to keep trying and hopefully one day she will read like the sweet leader that I interviewed.

It worked!  The children connected to the scripture and they understood the Truth!  Reading is hard!  “In a classroom of thirty students five will be gifted readers, five will have some type of learning concerns, and 20 will have to work hard to learn to read,” says Sally Shaywitz, M.D.  If you feel that your child needs extra help in reading please contact us and we can provide you with great community resources and age appropriate activities.
